Biophilia – Bring the Outdoors In
The goal of biophilic design is to increase connectivity to natural elements through the direct and indirect use of naturally-sourced materials like wood, stone, and living plants.
The essence of biophilic design is to recreate the feeling you get from being in nature, surrounded by lush greenery and natural light. It is all about bringing the outdoors in.
How to do it:
- Incorporate live edge wood material into kitchens, dining rooms, and bedrooms
- Consider natural (not painted) wood when planning accent walls and other interior decor to bring warmth and allow the natural grain to shine
- Bring living plants into your space and open up shades for optimal sunlight
Invest in Long-Lasting Pieces – Fast Furniture is Out
Flat-packed, mass-produced furniture has been popular for years due to its convenient and budget-friendly nature, but it looks like the fast furniture trend is disappearing.
Recent news stories about the negative environmental impact of ‘fast furniture’ has consumers looking elsewhere for longer-lasting and higher quality furniture. As people become more aware of the importance of sustainability, they’re turning away from ‘cheap’ and instead choosing options that last.
How to do it:
- Invest in custom designed furniture from a reputable maker – preferably in your local community to reduce transportation impacts
- Seek out high-quality, gently-used furniture from consignment or second-hand stores and refinish or refurbish rather than buying new
Dark Furniture, Warm Tones Take Center Stage
Neutral, earthy tones ebb and flow in popularity, and designers predict that rich dark furniture (like Walnut) and warm paint colors will take over as people seek cozy vibes in their hoes in the coming year.
2024 will see earthy browns, rich terracottas, and deep oranges take center state, bringing comfort and a homey feeling to spaces and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
How to do it:
- Introduce furniture in warm, rich tones like Walnut, Red Oak, Cherry, or consider refinishing existing light-colored wood furniture with a darker stain
- Paint an accent wall or an entire room a rich, warm color to introduce an earthy tone to the space
